Family farming is a form of rural production in which management and most of the labor are carried out by members of the same family. Generally developed on small properties, this type of farming stands out for the direct involvement of farmers in all stages of the production process — from planting and cultivation to the marketing of food.
Even though it occupies smaller areas than agribusiness, family farming plays a fundamental role in supplying the domestic market and ensuring food security for the population, both in Brazil and in many parts of the world.
The hallmark of family farming is the active participation of the family in the activities of the rural property. In Brazil, the criteria that officially define this type of production are established in Law No. 11,326, of July 24, 2006. According to the legislation, in addition to the predominance of family labor and management by the members of the family nucleus themselves, family farming must meet other requirements, such as:
- The use of small properties, generally with an area between 1 and 4 fiscal modules;
- The generation of income from the activities developed in the production unit itself;
- The possibility of hiring salaried workers, including family members, according to the production needs and the financial capacity of the property.
It is worth noting that family involvement does not exclude the use of hired labor, which can be employed depending on the size of the property and the volume of activities performed.
Family farming also encompasses a wide range of social groups and traditional communities.
This concept includes:
- foresters
- aquaculturists
- artisanal fishermen
- extractivists
- indigenous peoples
- quilombolas
- beneficiaries of agrarian reform
These groups contribute significantly to the preservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of natural resources and the appreciation of local culture.
Agricultural equipment and implements are crucial for family farming, increasing efficiency, reducing physical effort and optimizing production. However, access to these technologies can be a challenge for many family farmers. CONFAF Brazil is here to help you acquire these equipment in a simple and safe way.
Livestock farming developed in the context of family farming plays a relevant economic role, being based on raising animals on small rural properties, normally managed and operated by the family members themselves. This activity stands out for the variety of species raised and for its articulation with other agricultural practices.
Family farming plays an essential role in preserving the environment, adopting sustainable practices that help conserve natural resources and ensure food production. In addition, this form of agriculture drives local development, generates income and strengthens ties in rural communities.
