About us

CONFAF — the National Confederation of Family Farmers and Rural Family Entrepreneurs of Brazil - is a nationwide trade union that acts as a legitimate spokesperson for the interests of grassroots family farming organizations throughout the country. Its mission is to unite, welcome, and represent family farmers and rural entrepreneurs, promoting their productive, social, and political inclusion.

Committed to strengthening family farming as a fundamental pillar of sustainable rural development, CONFAF coordinates actions with public agencies, financial institutions, cooperatives, associations, and social movements, advocating for public policies that guarantee access to land, credit, technical assistance, infrastructure, training, and marketing of family farming products.

The organization also plays an important role in promoting the cultural identity and traditional knowledge of rural areas, seeking to promote the autonomy of rural communities and contribute to food sovereignty and security in Brazil. Through its network, CONFAF fosters cooperation between different regions and encourages sustainable and supportive production and management practices.

CONFAF is an institution committed to strengthening family ties, promoting citizenship, and developing more supportive and sustainable communities. Our actions are guided by principles that value the human being in all their dimensions.

These principles guide the actions of the Brazilian Family Farming Union Confederation – CONFAF BRAZIL, reaffirming its commitment to family farmers and a sustainable and equitable future for Brazil.

Family farming in Brazil

In Brazil's agricultural landscape, family farming occupies approximately 80.9 million hectares, representing approximately 23% of the country's total rural property area. According to data from the 2017 Agricultural Census, which surveyed more than 5 million establishments, approximately 77% were classified as family farming. This segment, of great social and economic importance, employed over 10 million people at the time, representing 67% of the rural workforce and directly contributing to the livelihood of 40% of the economically active population.

Family farming is recognized as one of the main food producers in Brazil, accounting for significant amounts of crops such as corn, cassava, rice, beans, sugarcane, and vegetables, as well as livestock such as cattle, pigs, poultry, goats, and sheep. Among permanent crops, it accounts for approximately 48% of the value of coffee and banana production. In temporary crops, it accounts for 80% of cassava production, 69% of pineapple production, and 42% of beans, among other significant crops. In municipalities with up to 20,000 inhabitants, family farming constitutes the main economic base in nine out of ten localities.

The legal definition of family farmer and rural family entrepreneur is established by Law No. 11,326 of July 24, 2006  - the so-called Family Farming Law. To qualify for this category, one must meet specific criteria, such as having a maximum of four tax modules, using primarily family labor, deriving income predominantly from activities carried out on the property, and having the establishment managed by the family itself. This classification includes small rural producers, traditional communities, agrarian reform settlers, artisanal fishermen, extractivists, aquaculturists, and foresters.
